Aly Zaker—image of a theatre icon

Aly Zaker, a well-known theatre personality of the country, has presented himself as a versatile character in our cultural arena. He played an active role in the country’s Liberation War in 1971. He is also a trustee of the Liberation War Museum, a writer and the owner of Asiatic Marketing Communications Limited.
Besides working as a cultural activist, Aly Zaker was also a war correspondent of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra, the lone radio station that broadcast news of the Liberation War of Bangladesh.
While talking to daily sun recently, Aly Zaker said he had no interest in politics. But, he has no hesitation to speak up for the right thing.
Aly Zaker has enriched the theatre industry with his outstanding contribution. He stepped into the theatre in 1972. And his remarkable works are Dewan Gazir Kissa, Acholayatan, Chhayanaut and many more. He has gained popularity for his brilliant acting as well as directing.
About his current theatre activity, he said, ‘We are rehearsing Acholayaton of Rabindranath Tagore. But because of the holy month Ramadan, we will not arrange any show now.’
As an actor on the small screen, Aly Zaker’s famous works are Pathar Shomoy, Bohubrihi, Aaj Robibar and so on.
About his current works on television, he said, ‘I do a small number of works for small screen. Recently, I have worked on three dramas and these are likely to be aired during Eid. Of the dramas, one has been made by my production house Dhanichitra, one has been produced by Masud Mahbub and the last one is Chayanika Chowdhury’s. The dramas will be aired on BTV, Maasranga and ntv.
About directing TV dramas, Aly Zaker said, ‘I have never directed any TV drama. However, our recent work is to make DVD of our own production.’
Aly Zaker has shown a talent for photography. He has a passion for photography. He held a photography exhibition titled Balika out of his huge collection of photographs at Arts Club of Gulshan in 2007. About photography, he said, ‘I will hold another photography exhibition in which half of the photographs will be black and white.’
About the themes of the photographs, he said, ‘Whatever seems to me eye-catching, I try to snap with my lense. Elements of nature like landscape, river, rural folks, still-things, birds and children always attract me.’
Sara Zaker, Aly Zaker’s wife, is also a renowned media personality, entrepreneur and a social activist. They are blessed with two children— Iresh Zaker and Sriya Sharbojoya. Both of them are involved with advertising agency.
About his son, Aly Zaker said, ‘Iresh is a good actor. He is also a skilled photographer. He always prefers quality work.’
In his life, actor Aly Zaker has achieved many prestigious awards. Some of them are National Academy of Performing Arts Award, Ekushey Padak, Sequence Award of Merit and Martyr Muneir Chowdhury Award.
