For the first time ever, the eminent printmaker Anisuzzaman is displaying a number of captivating watercolour paintings at the Institute of
Asian Creatives in Gulshan.
Though it is his 13th solo show, Anisuzzaman for the first time is exhibiting his skill as a romantic watercolourist through a comprehensive show featuring 35 lyrical paintings, done recently by the artist to get relief from his routine printmaking endeavours.
‘My main medium is printmaking, especially woodcut. This is my first painting exhibition. I have sought to depict the calm and quiet beauty of nature through my subject – water transportation’, said Anisuzzaman.
Titled as Verses Written through Water, the subject of the exhibition is water transportation. Anisuzzaman has chosen to paint different types of boats either anchored at the shore or freely idling on the large water bodies.
All 35 paintings of the series on display are well-composed, eye-soothing and charming. Viewers will be captivated for the composition and colourations in the paintings.
A number of paintings of the series like Verses Written through Water 6, 15 and 23 show single boats drifting by themselves, whereas the paintings like 11, 24, 26 show a group of boats huddled together.
Verses Written through Water 27 is one of the most attractive ones for its poetic delineation of the tranquility of riverside nature. This painting shows two abandoned dinghies moored at the shore beside the hay houses and green fields.
The boats on water embody the peace, serenity and stillness, a world apart from all the hustle and bustle of the city.
Most of the boats can easily be identified as fishing boats with fishing nets. The artist’s eyes even captured the lying fish pots and few bricks on the boats.
It is also noticeable that not even a single painting has a human figure. A total man-free, noise-free world has been depicted in the series.
The exhibition was inaugurated by AAMS Arefin Siddique, vice-chancellor of Dhaka University, on September 06. It will be open for all from 12pm to 8pm till September 17.
