Three plays to be staged on opening day
The second Ganga-Jamuna Theatre Festival begins today at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. Today three local theatre troupes will stage plays at
the three theatre halls of BSA.
The theatre troupe Natyakendra will stage its popular comedy Dui Je Chhilo Ek Chakor at the National Theatre Hall.
Dui Je Chhilo Ek Chakor is an adaptation from Carlo Goldoni’s ‘The Servant of Two Masters’. Adapted and directed by Tarik Anam Khan, the play addresses the social anomalies through the comic stories of ordinary people. The protagonist of the play is a domestic help, acted by Yousuf Hasan Arko, who tries to please the two masters simultaneously. Through a series of funny incidents done by the servant while serving two masters, ‘Dui Je Chhilo Ek Chakor’ unveils some burning issues of the contemporary Bangladesh.
At the Experimental Theatre Hall, theatre troupe Prangonemor will stage Aurangzeb.
Mohit Chattopadhyay’s play, directed by Ananta Hira, is based on the history of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The play fuses elements of history like
Aurangzeb’s war for throne, his conflict with his father Shah Jahan over ideology and many others.
At the Studio Theatre Hall, Theatre Department of Dhaka University will stage Selim Al Deen’s noted play Chaka.
Directed by Sudip Chakroborthy, Chaka features a tragic story. It begins with a corpse carried on a cart by a puller who has been assigned by government officials to deliver it to its relatives. But the address given to the cart puller is a vague one, and so the puller fails to deliver the corpse. Finally he, along with two others, buries the corpse on their own. The play is in the Kotha-Natya form, developed by Deen, where kathoks (narrators) narrate the story of the play and enact the roles.
Ganga-Jamuna Theatre Festival will have three shows every day, and will end on September 16.
