A Bangladesh Rifles soldier reportedly committed suicide in the Sylhet sector headquarters in Akhalia area of the city on Wednesday.
The deceased, Waliullah Sheikh, 23, a soldier of 38 Rifles battalion under the Sylhet sector headquarters, came from village Bhandertek under Batiyaghata upazila in Khulna.
Police recovered the body hanging from a bathroom in the soldiers’ line of the sector headquarters at about 11:15am, in presence of executive magistrate Hakim Abul Hasan.
The body was sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy and a case of unnatural death was filed with the Kotwali police, sources in the police said.
Assistant director of the BDR sector headquarters, Maksud Ali, told New Age that Waliullah was deputed to the BDR headquarters in Pilkhana during the February 25-26 rebellion.
He joined the Sylhet sector headquarters after reporting to the Kotwali police.
With the death of Waliullah, six border guards and the imam of the central mosque in the BDR headquarters died after the February 25-26 mutiny.
On March 22, Lance Naik Mobarak Hossain, 42, died after he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. A BDR soldier died at Khagrachari battalion on March 24. Body of Naik Subedar Mozammel Haque, 50, was found at the BDR headquarters on March 9, having reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ventilator of a toilet on the third floor of the Orchestra Bhaban. Another BDR man, Monir Hossain, died on March 17, after reportedly falling sick at the Pilkhana. Waheduzzaman, 38, of Joypurhat Rifles Battalion-3 reportedly committed suicide at the barracks of the battalion in Jaipurhat on March 15.
On March 11, the Pilkhana central mosque Imam, Siddiqur Rahman, died reportedly of a heart attack. Siddiq, an important witness to the February 25 rebellion inside the Pilkhana, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on March 10 after he suffered a heart attack during interrogation. He died on March 11.
