Bangladesh Ansar maintained their dominance in the eighth Bangladesh thanks to their exploits in gymnastics and volleyball on its fifth day on Thursday.
Ansar, who finished the day with 50 gold medals overall, claimed five gold medals from gymnastics with Anita Akhter and Parul Akhter their most outstanding performers at bar.
Anita obtained gold in parallel bar and uneven bar while Parul emerged as the most successful gymnast in floor exercise. Nargis Akhter of BKSP won the other gold available in the vault event of women’s gymnastics.
In the men’s gymnastics event, Jahirul Islam of Ansar and Abul Kalam Azad of BJMC grabbed two gold medals each.
Ansar’s other notable performance on the day came in women’s volleyball when they got the better of BJMC by 3-2 in the final to secure gold.
Bangladesh Army, meanwhile, claimed gold in the men’s volleyball event after outclassing Titas Gas by 3-0 in the final with the bronze going to Bangladesh Navy.
Boarder Guard Bangladesh (BGB) snatched the gold medal in the men’s handball event outplaying Bangladesh Police by 31-23 in the final at the Captain Mansur Ali handball stadium.
BGB narrowly lead the first-half by 15-11 before they came hard to add 16 goals in the second half to ensure their first gold in the Games.
In the tennis event, the pair of Sharmin Alam Sharda and Moffazal Hossain trounced the duo of Sathi Sarker and Milon Hossain in the final of mixed doubles at the National Tennis Complex in Ramna while in the bronze-deciding match, the pair of Shah Safina and Mamun Bepari defeated Omar Faruque and Nadia Ripa.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Olympic Association announced cash rewards for record-breaking athletes at the ongoing eighth Bangladesh Games, confirmed Shahed Reza, secretary general of the BOA on Thursday.
Mahfizur Rahman Sagor, who amassed four national records in eight events in the recently concluded swimming discipline, was elated with the announcement. So far 12 national records have been produced till Thursday, including nine in the swimming event.
Meanwhile in football, Barisal and BKSP will face off in the final on Saturday after seeing off Jhenidah and Noakhali respectively at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Thursday.
In the first semi-final at the big bowl, Barisal overcame Jhenidah 2-1 while in the second last-four clash, BKSP beat Noakhali 1-0.
