The Rajshahi University students observed the ‘day against repression’ on Thursday, demanding withdrawal of all cases filed against students who protested at repression on teachers, students and employees of the university by law enforcers on the campus on August 22 in 2007 during the then army-backed caretaker government. That day, law enforcers assaulted RU teachers, students and employees who lodged protest against an assault by army men on some Dhaka University students during a football match at the DU central playground.
To mark the day, the students brought out a procession on the campus to observe the day and after that they arranged a short gathering.
In the gathering, speakers condemning the army-backed caretaker government in 2007 alleged that though cases filed against the teachers of RU and
DU were already withdrawn, cases against all students were yet to be withdrawn.
Among others, Sumon Augustine Soren and Ikbal Kabir, president and general secretary of Biplabi Chhatra Moitri, Golam Mostafa, president of Chhatra Federation, and Ayatullah Khomeni, president of Bangladesh Chhatra Union, and Alomgir Hossain Sujon and Shipon Ahmed, general secretary and former president of Somajtantrik Chhatra Front and Chhatra Union respectively, spoke on the occasion.
Later, the students submitted a memorandum including four demands to the RU vice-chancellor, Professor Mizanuddin.
