Archer Mohammad Tamimul Islam gave Bangladesh rare success in an international meet when he won a gold medal of the boys’ recurve bow individual event in the 5th Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa on Thursday. Tamimul defeated India’s Nishanth Kumawat in the final to clinch the gold. Bangladesh also won a bronze medal on Thursday thanks to Nandini Khan Swapna as she defeated Malaysia’s Noor Amalia Hanisha in girl’s recurve bow individual event for a podium finish.
Tamimul, a HSC second year student of BKSP, began his playing career in 2011.
The 16-year old boy from Lalmonirhat came under the spotlight after winning the team gold in the 5th National Archery Championship in the same year.
He was also a part of Bangladesh’s silver medal winning team in the Asia Cup Stage-2 World Ranking Tournament in March 2015.
Swapna, a 16-year old girl from Faridpur, represents Bangladesh Army.
Bangladesh’s previous success in Youth Commonwealth Games was earlier limited to weightlifter Fatema Akter Moyna’s bronze medal at Pune in 2008.
State minister for youth and sports Biren Sikder, Bangladesh Cricket Board and Bangladesh Football Federation among others congratulated the archers for their success in Commonwealth Youth Games.
