The president, Abdul Hamid, also chancellor of the University of Dhaka, appointed AAMS Arefin Siddique the vice-chancellor for the next four years, an education ministry circular said on Sunday.
The university senate at a special session on Saturday elected three people — AAMS Arefin Siddique, who was vice-chancellor, Nasreen Ahmad, the incumbent pro-vice-chancellor (academic), and soil, water and environment teacher Shahid Akhtar Hossain, the incumbent pro-vice-chancellor (administration) — unopposed to a panel for the appointment as the vice-chancellor amid protests by some teachers and students.
The elections to the vice-chancellor’s panel was held after nine years, with the previous one taking place in 2004.
Mass communication and journalism teacher Arefin Siddique was appointed vice-chancellor temporarily on January 17, 2009 after SMA Faiz had resigned as vice-chancellor. But giving the excuse of ‘lack of congenial atmosphere,’ he delayed the vice-chancellor’s panel elections.
‘The president and chancellor of the university (Dhaka) appointed Arefin Siddique as vice-chancellor from three member panel,’ said the circular issued on Sunday.
Arefin’s appointment was made under Dhaka University Order 1973 Section 11(1) which says: ‘The vice-chancellor shall be appointed by the chancellor for a period of four years from a panel of three persons to be nominated by the senate on such terms and conditions as may be determined by the chancellor, and shall be eligible for re-appointment for a further period of four years.’
Arefin sought everybody’s help to run the university smoothly.
