The newly elected Sylhet city mayor, Ariful Haque Chowdhury, on Wednesday vowed to keep the corporation free from the influence of any political quarter.
‘Development of any political polarisation centring the city corporation will not be allowed and the corporation will run as an institution of all citizens,’ he said.Arif was addressing a programme held at noon at Nagar Bhaban after he took the charge of the corporation.
The mayor also re-iterated his commitment to meeting the expectations of the city dwellers for what they have voted him to the mayoral post and sought their cooperation.
‘I will turn Sylhet into a clean spiritual city with the association from all walks of people in society,’ Arif added.
He said he took the office when its revenue sector was completely empty and he had already submitted a 10-point proposal to the finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith for development of the city.
‘The finance minister has assured me of implementing the proposed project. I hope, he will keep his word,’ Arif said.
SCC in-charge mayor Mohammed Shahjahan chaired the programme which was as addressed, among others, by councillor Rezaul Hasan Koyes Ludi, Shahanara Begum, Farhad Chowdhury Shamim and Suhel Ahmed Ripan.
