Jahirul Islam Jahir, arrested in connection with the killing of businessman Ali Asgar of Lalbagh and slicing the body into 15 parts, was on Saturday remanded in custody for five days for interrogation.
The Detective Branch, assigned to investigate the case, produced Jahir in the chief metropolitan magistrate’s court Saturday afternoon seeking him to be remanded for seven days. The court allowed him to be remanded for five days.
The Lalbagh police earlier arrested Jahir on Thursday soon after the recovery of body slices from different parts of the city from Azimpur Mouchak Colony to Shahidnagar. He was taken into the custody of the Detective Branch.
During interrogation, Jahir reportedly told the police he had a longstanding friendship and business relation with Asgar.
Two others, Rubel and Mohsin, of the locality also had friendship with Jahir and Asgar, he told the police.
They used to have fun and frolic with women in the house of Jahir on Raj Narayan Dhar Road whenever Jahir’s wife, Tania Akter Poly, stayed out of the house, he told the police.
At one point, Asgar developed an illicit relationship with Tania for which Jahir became angry, he said, claiming Asgar had also developed similar relationship with the wives of Rubel and Mohsin.
The three then conspired to kill Asgar. They carried out the plan Wednesday night after calling the victim to the house of Jahir, the police said.
Local residents alleged Jahir was wanted by the Lalbagh police. He was back in criminal activities, returning to the locality from hiding a few months ago.
The local people, meanwhile on Friday, attacked the houses of Rubel and Mohsin when their names came up in connection with the killing of Asgar. The two went into hiding after the killing.
The police tackled the situation and remained stood guards in the locality on Saturday.
