Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam on Sunday rejected the media reports which stated that he has resigned from the party post.
“The news published by a section of newspapers about my resignation is totally baseless and false. A vested quarter is spreading propaganda just to achieve political gains,” he said while talking to reporters outside Parliament. Syed Ashraf, who is also the Minster for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, said he has no knowledge about the resignation from the post of party general secretary.
“You (journalists) can tell me if you have such information,” he told reporters.
The AL general secretary made the statement a day after a rumour spread on Saturday that he has submitted his resignation letter to the AL chief Sheikh Hasina on Thursday by shouldering the responsibility of the debacle of the ruling party backed candidates suffering in the recently concluded elections of the five city corporations.
However it is reported that the Prime Minister refused to accept the resignation.
Earlier, AL Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif told reporters the campaign is an attempt to weaken the unity of the party and to create confusion. The AL leader also alleged that a politically motivated group within the party along with outside forces was engaged in this act.
