Awami League general secretary and LGRD minister Syed Ashraful Islam on Saturday urged the opposition to place its adjournment motion on the election time government before the parliament again assuring that his party would not come up with any argument against it for arriving at a resolution of the present situation. “Place your (opposition) adjournment motion to the Speaker again for the sake of the country and its democracy. We assure you that we will not put up any argument against it by dint of our majority,” the ruling party general secretary told a unity convention of different left wing parties in the city.
The Awami League general secretary observed that the opposition BNP had taken away its adjournment motion on caretaker government as it did not want a debate on it. At the same time, the opposition was conspiring to go to power through the back door, he alleged.
“We hoped that the BNP would come up with their views before the nation in the parliament and we will also put our opinions before the nation. But the opposition withdrew its adjournment motion and staged a walk out. Thus they made it clear that they do not want to sit for a dialogue,” Syed Ashraful Islam observed.
He alleged that when the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina offered the opposition talks, they preferred instead to oust an elected government, using the Hefazat-e-Islam. But their machinations had failed finally, since an elected government cannot be toppled in such a manner. The AL leader also came down hard on the members of the country’s civil society for coming up with different formulas on the election time government.
He further blasted those who talk about the caretaker government system on the talk-shows, accusing them of not wanting democracy in the country. They would not be able to make any contribution towards keeping the democracy alive in the country, Syed Ashraful Islam further observed.
Calling upon the leaders of the coutnry’s left-leaning political parties to unite saying that a vacuum has been created in the country’s politics. If you (left leaders) can prepare yourself properly, you can play a role for providing an alternative to the Awami League.
“BNP is no more an alternative to Awami League.” He said.
The LGRD Minister also noted that the people would not accept the budget criticism made by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD).
Bangladesh Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon,MP, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) chief Mujahidul Islam Selim also spoke at the convention.
