Bangladesh squad for England ODI tour
Ashraful, Naeem axed, Roqibul, Faisal return
Former skipper Mohammad Ashraful has been axed from the Bangladesh one-day squad for the series against England, Scotland and Ireland. The selectors on Saturday named 15-member squad for the back-to-back series that also saw all-rounder Naeem Islam and left-arm spinner Sohrawardi Shuvo excluded.
Middle-order batsmen Roqibul Hassan and Faisal Hossain replaced Ashraful and Naeem respectively while paceman Nazmul Hossain claimed the place of spinner Shuvo.
Roqibul returned to the side three months after he retired from all cricket in March only to change his heart within a week. The Bangladesh Cricket Board had suspended Roqibul for his retirement that upset the team’s plan two days before a Test match against England.
His suspension will expire on June 30.
Faisal Hossain, the first specialist left-handed batsman to play for Bangladesh, returned to the side after almost six years having played last of his four one-day internationals against Pakistan in July 29, 2004.
Faisal, 31, was rewarded for his consistent performance for Bangladesh A team as well as domestic tournaments.
Former captain Ashraful paid the price for his poor performance in the Test series against England and the subsequent Asia Cup. Ashraful made 29 runs in the first two matches against India and Sri Lanka before he was dropped for the third match against Pakistan.
His contribution in the Test series in England was only 50 runs in four innings.
Bangladesh will leave for England on June 29 and will start their campaign with a warm-up match against Sussex on July 3. The Tigers will play their three ODIs against England on July 8, 10 and 12 before heading to Ireland for two ODIs, which will be held on July 15 and 16.
They will end the tour with two ODIs against Scotland and the Netherlands respectively on July 19 and 20.
