A Dhaka court on Sunday granted Awami League lawmaker Md Golam Maula Rony bail in a case of ‘attempted murder’ filed by the Independent Television management
after he had assaulted their two journalists.
Rony, also editor of online news portal Different News, appeared before the court of metropolitan magistrate Md Rezaul Karim, seeking bail in the case filed with the Shahbagh police station on Saturday.
The counsel of Rony told the court in the petition that the lawmaker was a law abiding person and most of the time remained busy with parliament sessions. The magistrate granted him bail on a bond of Tk 5,000.
On Saturday, Independent Television assistant manager Younus Ali filed the case of ‘attempted murder’ with Shahbagh police station against Rony and 20-25 unnamed people.
The lawmaker along with his associates is reported to have beaten up the private television journalist Imtiaz Momin Sony and his cameraperson Mohsin Mukul when they approached him for an interview over a report on corruption allegations against him in his office on Topkhana Road in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon.
Rony, however, denied the allegations but said that an unpleasant incident had taken place as Independent Television journalists had been following his activities for a week over his recent statements against share market scam.
Rony also filed a case against Independent Television owner Salman F Rahman, the journalists he had allegedly assaulted, and 30 unnamed people with the Shahbagh police on charge of an ‘attempted murder’, abduction and extortion.
Rony, the lawmaker for the Patuakhali 3 constituency, earlier had beaten journalist in his area in 2009.
The home minister, Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir, meanwhile, told journalists at the secretariat that the law would take its own course over the matter. Police will take action after investigation.
Shahbagh police inspector (investigation) Abdul Jalil said they has already assigned investigation officers into the two cases.
