The authorities of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College have spotted cracks in some classrooms and sought immediate action from the higher authorities to avoid any untoward incidents at the renowned institution set up in 1952 on the city’s Bailey Road.
The principal, Manjuara Begum, in her last week letter to the department of public works and education ministry, said, `School management committee has spotted faults in some classrooms on April 27 but due to room shortage they need to continue classes amid life risk of nearly 11,000 students of the main branch on Bailey Road.’
However, no fault was found in other three branches at Dhanmondi, Azimpur and Bashundhara.
‘Cracks have been found in some classrooms in the old buildings and incidents of plaster coming off the roofs have also been witnessed in the recent days. We have failed to reconstruct or repair the structure for fund shortage,’ said the letter.
Referring to Dhaka University Jagannath Hal tragedy that took place in 1985, claiming 39 lives, and the April 24 Savar tragedy, the principal sought action from the departments concerned to avoid any incident.
The principal told New Age that immediately after the incident of Savar, the school management committee spot faults in
some classrooms and decided to take necessary action.
She said copy of the letter had been sent to the director general of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education and Chairman of Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka.
Sheuli Aktar, a senior teacher of the school, said, ‘Some guardians have also talked to us about the incidents of plaster coming off the roof in the past weeks. They have requested the school authorities to take immediate action.’
Officials at the education ministry and DSHE said they received the letter on Thursday.
