Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation and the International Rice Research Institute jointly organised a workshop on ‘Sustainable Crop Production’ at a hotel in the capital on Sunday.
The agriculture secretary Md Sayedul Islam was present as chief guest in the workshop presided over by BADC chairman AFM Hayatullah.
Higher officials from agriculture ministry, IRRI, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Directorate of Agriculture Extension and other organisations were present in the workshop.
Agriculture secretary Md Sayedul Islam said that Bangladesh has achieved the third place in rice production in the world. The agricultural system is facing various challenges including changing climate, overpopulation, natural calamities, and lack of quality seeds.
He emphasised developing new varieties of quality rice in accordance with the needs of farmers, development of efficient management along with development of new technologies.
The BADC chairman said that 29 varieties have been developed in a short period of time under the initiative of BADC Research Cell. There 10 potato varieties, 17 crops, 1 oil crop and 1 vegetable crop.
