The Ruma and Rowangchhari upazilas have been placed under a temporary tourist ban until further notice, by the Bandarban district administration, reports UNB, citing Deputy Commissioner Yasmin Parvin Tibrizi.
Effective from Tuesday, 18 October, the administration said the decision was made for the overall safety of tourists.
Md Mamun Shibli and Md Khorshed Alam Chowdhury, upazila nirbahi officers of Ruma and Rowangchhari, told UNB that tourists have been banned in the upazilas because there would be a joint drive of law enforcers.
Also, security forces and Rapid Action Battalion have intensified operations in the two upazilas.
The restriction was put into effect after Rab on October 12 ordered offenders in hilly areas to voluntarily surrender. They had distributed leaflets with the instruction.
Md. Nasirul Alam, head of the district’s micro-jeep-mahindra owners’ cooperative association, stated that, the operation of tourist vehicles was put on hold yesterday. He added that it was unclear when the ban would be lifted.
