Bangla Academy organised a programme at its Syed Waliullah Seminar Room on Wednesday marking the 114th birth anniversary of our National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, which actually falls on May 25.
Director general of the academy professor Shamsuzzaman Khan delivered the welcome address while professor Shantanu Kaisar presented his speech titled ‘Nazrul: Jibon O Shahityer Jugalbandi’. National professor Mustafa Nurul Islam presided over the session.
‘Nazrul’s immortal literature is significant not only for Bangladesh but also for the history of this subcontinent. Bangla Academy will release books on his life and works,’ said Shamsuzzaman Khan during the discussion.
‘Nazrul is relevant to our contemporary national life. He talked about humanity, equity and protested against fundamentalism in his significant poems penned in the last century. We need to take the essences of his work to move forward as a nation,’ said Professor Shantanu Kaisar.
Following the discussion, leading and aspiring Nazrul artistes rendered songs composed by the poet. The cultural programme opened with singer Afroza Mita’s rendition of two less familiar numbers of Nazrul-Ay moru parer hawa niye jare Madinai and Shama namey laglo agun.
Sujit Mustafa sang Darale duare mor k tumi bhikharini. Yusuf Ahmed Khan rendered the song Bon horini tobo baka ankhi merona teer and Jabar belay fele jeyo ekti khopar phool. The songs were received with a good round of applause by the audience.
