The country’s first search engine for Bangla contents on
the internet — Pipilika.com — was launched on Saturday.
The Pipilika was jointly developed by students of Shahjalal University
of Science and Technology, Sylhet, and GPIT Ltd.‘This is a major steps for Bangla speaking people all around the world as they will be able to find the Bangla content in the internet,’ information and communication technology minister Mostafa Faruque Mohammed said while launching the website at Ruposhi Bangla Hotel.
He said the youth should plan for bigger ventures in the ICT sector to take the country forward.
Bangla is the default language of newly launched Pipilika which would take English keyboard command like Avro.
The capacity of the search engine is four terabyte with more than 600 gigabyte of RAM.
‘We needed such a search engine not only for finding Bangla content in the world wide web but also it will help us to build a archive of Bangla contents across the globe,’ said Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, who teaches engineering at SUST.
He said Pipilika would create a huge archive of Bangle content and will allow the developers analyse data and usage pattern of the Bangla speakers.
‘In developed countries, major developments are done through collaboration of universities and private industry operators, which is very rare in Bangladesh. Pipilika is also a very successful model from that perspective,’ he said.
State minister for science and technology Yeafesh Osman, said the initiative was the new beginning for Bangla language.
‘Not only the writers and poets are contributing for Bangla language but the science professional are also doing their part,’ he said.
Bangladesh Bank governor Atiur Rahman, Bishwa Sahitya Kendra chairman Abdullah Abu Sayeed and GPIT’s chief executive officer Raihan Shamsi were present among others.
