More and more people in Bangladesh are now using Internet for daily work like many other countries in the world, according to a global web index report published in London on Friday. Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s World Wide Web Foundation published the report. Bangladesh is 64th among 81 countries in the index, which looks at how the Web empowers people and delivers socio-economic impact. India ranked 56th, Pakistan 77th and Nepal 71st in the list. Scores are given in the areas of access, freedom and openness, relevant content and empowerment. Last year, when the index was first published, Bangladesh ranked 55th among 61 countries surveyed.
According to the report, first released in 2012, the 2013 Index has been expanded and refined to include 20 new countries and features an enhanced data set, particularly in the areas of gender, Open Data, privacy rights and security. Sweden topped the annual Web Index, followed by Norway, the UK and the US and the Philippines. In Bangladesh, SMS and interactive voice response (IVR) systems are used to offer agricultural advice and disseminate warning information, it says.
