The Bangladesh Cricket Board is hoping to stage the Asia Cup 2014 after they received a green signal from India, which was originally scheduled to host the one-day
tournament in February-March next year, said the officials on Saturday.
The Asian Cricket Council had offered India to hosts the twelfth edition of the Asia Cup from Feb 23 to March 7 after Pakistan was ruled out as hosts on security ground. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh hosted the previous two editions, so it was the turn of either Pakistan or India, the two other cricketing giants of the region.
The last edition held in Bangladesh in 2012 was a huge success which made the organisers of the tournament, the Asian Cricket Council, to have a look at the country once India showed little interest.
‘We are hopeful of hosting the Asia Cup 2014,’ Nizamuddin Chowdhury, acting BCB chief executive officer, who recently attended an ACC meeting in Kuala Lumpur where the issue was discussed in details.
His comments came hours after BCB president Nazmul Hasan told a private television channel about the possibility.
BCB ad hoc committee member and chairman of the media and communication committee Jalal Yunus added that Bangladesh’s name came up as the hosts at the last meeting of the ACC when India declined the offer.
‘I think we had proven our worth as a successful host and that has come into consideration,’ Jalal told New Age on Saturday.
India, however, assured that they will participate in the tournament despite their busy schedule in early 2014 and has already decided to shorten their New Zealand trip for this purpose.
