The Bangladesh Olympic Association unveiled the logo and mascot of the 8th Bangladesh Games on Sunday. The Games will be held from April 20 to 28.
The mascot of the 2002 Bangladesh Games was `Deer’, but this time the officials chose a ‘Squirrel’ with a games medal around its neck and showing a victory sign. It has been named `Tarunya’. The logo has been painted in five colours
of Olympic rings as well as the national flag’s red and green colours.
The state minister for youth and sports, Ahad Ali Sarkar, unveiled the logo and mascot at a ceremony where the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on youth and sports, Zahid Ahsan Russell, sports secretary Nur Mohammad, information secretary Hedayetul Alam, chairman of the steering committee of the games Harunur Rashid and BOA acting secretary general Ashikur Rahman Miku were also present.
Lt Col Kamrul Hasan, member-secretary of the ceremonies committee, explained why they chose squirrel as the mascot of the Games.
`Squirrel is a symbol of speed and it is such a wonderful animal which is found everywhere in the country. So we think the mascot of squirrel will bring spirit and energy among the athletes. As for the design of the logo, we kept the colours of five Olympic rings in mind and highlighted the red and green colours of our national flag,’ he said.
The theme of the Bangladesh Games is `Sports in our heart’.
A total of 6,855 athletes will participate in 356 events of 31 disciplines and will take place in 21 venues, confirmed Ashikur Rahman Miku, acting general secretary of the BOA.
