Bangladesh Railway will operate a special Mango train on the Chapainawabganj-Dhaka route via Rajshahi this season for the fourth consecutive year.
Asim Kumar Talukder, general manager of the western zone of the railway, said that they have already started preparations for deploying two trains to transport mangoes at a lower cost for the benefit of mango traders and growers.
‘We are planning to launch the special train by May 25 as the growers and the traders urged them to do so,’ said Asim.
The western railway authorities held a discussion meeting with mango farmers and traders at Chapainawabganj Railway Station on Thursday over launching the special mango train.
In the meeting, the growers and the traders told the authorities that they hardly benefited in the past year as the train was delayed.
Sujit Kumar Biswas, chief commercial manager of the west zone, who addressed the meeting as the chief guest, said that farmers and traders could transport goods at a cost of Tk 1.30 from Chapainawabganj to Dhaka.
He said that they would add two more additional compartments to the special train.
Earlier in 2020, the mango special train was launched for the first time to mitigate transportation problems of the growers.
It was also launched in 2021 and in 2022 for second and third time consecutively.
Officials said that mangoes were cultivated on 92,913 hectares of land in four districts of Rajshahi region comprised of Chapainawabganj, Naogaon, Natore and Rajshahi districts.
