Three hundred and twenty members of Formed Police Unit from Bangladesh got the United Nations medal at a colourful ceremony in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on May 10, an UN release said.
The ceremony was attended by the deputy special representative of the UN secretary general in Haiti, Nigel Fisher, commissioner of the UN police Marc Tardif, and the Contingent Commander of Bangladesh FPU-1 Lieutenant Colonel Hashibul Alam.
The FPU has provided security in several parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince, in support of the Haitian national police. During its time in Haiti, members of the FPU regularly conducted patrols, manned fixed checkpoints and escorted various dignitaries.
Bangladesh is the world’s largest contributor of military and police personnel to UN peacekeeping with more than 10,000 currently deployed in nine operations.
In addition to Haiti, Bangladeshi peace heroes are present in Cote d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lebanon, Liberia, South Sudan, Sudan, Timor-Leste and Western Sahara.
