Uninterrupted Onion Import
Banks at land ports asked to keep open on Friday, Saturday
Bangladesh Bank on Wednesday asked the scheduled banks to keep open their authorised dealer branches on Friday and Saturday before the vacation of Eid-ul-Fitr at the country’s land ports along the Indian boarder in a bid to uninterrupted import of onions from the neighbouring country.
The BB issued a circular to managing directors and chief executive officers of all banks saying that it had made the decision to help import of onions uninterruptedly from India for meeting the ongoing Ramadan and the Eid-ul-Fitr demand.
Besides, the BB circular said that the central bank had taken the move so that the required demand for onions
could be supplied to the market stabilising the price of the essential commodity.
The BB also reminded the banks that it had made another decision on December 7, 2006 that the banks had to keep open their authorised dealer branches on every Friday and Saturday which located at the airports in Dhaka and Chittagong, the seaports in Chittagong and Mongla, and the land ports of Benapole, Sona Masjid, and Hili.
