Onion Import From India
Banks to keep open land port branches every day before Puja, Eid
The Bangladesh Bank on Thursday asked the scheduled banks to keep open their branches located at the land ports along the border between Bangladesh and India in weekly holidays before Eid-ul-Azha and Durga Puja to facilitate uninterrupted onion import for the neighbouring country.
The BB issued a circular to managing directors and chief executive officers of all banks asking them to keep open the branches every day including Fridays and Saturdays before the two religious festivals so that the businesses could import onion from India uninterruptedly.
A BB official told New Age on Thursday that the central bank took the decision in a bid to keep the market price of onion stable ahead of the two festivals.
The demand for onion will increase significantly ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, he said.
Besides, the BB has recently asked banks to impose highest 12 per cent rate of interest on financing for onion import, he said.
The price of onion recently eased a little after rising to around Tk 100 a kilogram in the local market.
