Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were forced to wear their away kits to ‘improve visibility’ as they faced off in the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday night, reports the Sun.
The Spanish giants have played each other six times in the last 16 months – with Barca winning on each occasion – without having to wear their alternative strips. But ahead of Tuesday night’s fixture, UEFA forced the pair to don their second kits at Barcelona’s Nou Camp stadium.
According to the home side’s website, European football’s administrative body made the request ‘in an effort to improve visibility and clearly differentiate the teams for both referees and spectators’.
Barcelona – who usually play in maroon and blue vertical stripes – took to the field in their red and gold away kit, while Atleti, who play in a red and white striped home kit, sported their dark blue second strip for the crunch quarter-final.
However, it’s not the first time Barca have worn a yellow kit at home in a Champions League game.
The Catalan giants wore an alternative strip in a 2008 game against Wisla Krakow at the preliminary stages of the competition, which was also the first competitive match of the club’s former manager Pep Guardiola’s tenure.
