Sports Reporter
Barisal repeated their success against Rajshahi to share the lead in the National Cricket League when they won the second-leg one-day match at the Fatullah Cricket Stadium yesterday.
It was however a day for out-of-favour Nafis Iqbal who smashed an unbeaten hundred as Chittagong again thrashed bottom-side Dhaka by five wickets at the Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium.
In the other sixth round game, Sylhet also had double delight against Khulna when they secured a 39-run victory in the second-leg at BKSP.
Barisal raised their tally to eight points to jointly lead the table with Rajshahi while with their third successes Chittagong and Sylhet improved their tally to six points to share third position with Khulna.
BARISAL-RAJSHAHI
Hannan Sarker hit a half-century in the low-scoring match as Barisal chased down their opponent’s paltry total to register a two-wicket victory. Barisal won the first-leg match also by the same margin.
Chasing a target of 175, Barisal lost wickets at regular interval in one end but the discarded national opener occupied the other end to give a foundation. Number eight Abul Bashar (27 not out) and Monowar Hossain (12 not out) added valuable runs as Barisal reached the target for eight wickets in 48.5 overs.
Earlier Rajshahi managed only 174 for nine in their share of 50 overs thanks to an 85-ball 55 by captain Anisur Rahman.
Man-of-the-match Monowar caused the early damage by taking two wickets for 22 runs in eight overs.
CHITTAGONG- DHAKA
After an early hiccup Nafis Iqbal put his opponent bowlers to the sword as Chittagong scored 248 runs for five wickets in 46.1 overs in reply to Dhaka’s 244 for five.
The right-hander smote 19 fours and a six during his 145-ball 137-run essay while Tariq Ahmed contributed 39 runs. Shahadat Hossain claimed two wickets for 37 runs.
Dhaka rode on two half-centuries from Javed Omar and Shamsur Rahman to put up a decent total on the board while Nazmul Hossain was the other notable scorer with a 35-ball 48 that saw three fours and two sixes.
SYLHET-KHULNA
After a bright start Mohammad Mithun made a quickfire fifty as Sylhet scored impressive 249 for eight in their share of 50 overs after being put into bat first.
Mithun smashed four sixes and two fours to make 54-ball 60 after Imtiaz Hossain Saikat Ali added 61 runs in the opening stand.
In reply, Khulna were restricted to 210-9 in 50 overs. Most of the Khulna batsmen got start but failed to carry their bat and it was number ten Bishawnath Halder who added 31-ball 30 to reduce the gap.
Monir Hossain was most successful bowler with 3 for 31 runs while Saikat and Sharif-ullah took two wickets each.
