Recently demised noted singer Bashir Ahmed was remembered through award giving ceremony, discussion and presentation of the singer’s popular songs at a programme at the Music and Dance Centre auditorium of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Thursday.
Bashir Ahmed, who dominated the music industry in the 60s and 70s and is considered as one of the most popular singers of the country, died on April 19 after establishing a remarkable career that spanned over five decades.
The programme was organised by cultural organisation Swapnakuri, which also celebrated its 27th founding anniversary at the programme.
Ranajit Kumar Biswas, secretary of the cultural affairs minister, was present at the programme as chief guest. Liaquat Ali Lucky, director general of BSA, noted poet Nasir Ahmed, eminent singer Fatema-Tuz-Zhora, noted lyricist Shahidullah Farawaji, and others spoke at the programme as special guests.
The speakers at the discussion session observed that Bashir Ahmed was a gifted singer and a devoted musician. His contributions, especially in the film industry are immense. The speakers also observed that the country has lost one of its greatest musicians with the death of the singer.
The speakers also recalled that Bashir Ahmed was a great composer and lyricist as well, and wrote some memorable songs in Urdu films before the country’s liberation. Some of such songs are Kuch Apni Kahiyye Kuch Meri Sunyey (Talash), Main Rickshawalla Matwala (Talash), Ja Dekha Pyar Tera (Sagar), Jab Tum Akele Hoge Hum Yaad Aaein Gay (Karwan).
Noted poet Nurul Huda, eminent singer Kanak Chapa and Nazrul researcher from India Hasmot Jalal were honoured at the programme.
The discussion session was followed by presentation of Bashir Ahmed’s songs by the students of Swapnakuri. The singers presented Amar Khatar Proti Patai Proti Kobitay in chorus.
In solo presentations, Sushanta Saikat, Tumpa Das, Brishty, and others presented classics of Ahmed including Onek Sadher Moyna Amar, Jaare Jabi Jodi Jah, Badhon Kete Jay, and others.
