Bangladesh Bank on Sunday urged the Inspector General of Police to increase security at banks operating across the country as the bank branches faced attacks, vandalism and arson in recent times due to prevailing unrest and subversive activities.
The BB wrote a letter to the IGP requesting that the security cover, including the deployment of additional police force, should be increased at the main and branch offices of all banks to help them function smoothly.
A BB official told New Age on Sunday that the central bank had taken the initiative as a number of banks had recently been attacked during the recent spates of political violence.
The BB letter said that the banks had recently faced various types of attacks, arsons and vandalisms which are very risky for the security of the banks.
Such types of subversive activities have hindered the banks to give services to their clients and businessmen, the BB said.
Besides, the violence also created an anxiety for the banks’ staff, the letter said.
Under the circumstances, it is needed to intensify the security measures to protect the banks so that banking activities can be operated smoothly and uninterruptedly.
