The Bangladesh Bank has sent letters to the home ministry and all commercial banks asking them to check inflow of fake currency in all cattle markets across the country ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
In the letter, the central bank has asked them to take adequate measures to detect counterfeit notes
in the markets. The committees, formed at national and district level to prevent the circulation of fake notes in the markets, have also been given the same directive.
‘We fear exchange of fake note in the cattle markets ahead of Eid-ul-Azha as large amount of money is exchanged throughout days and night in a mad rush to buy cows ahead of the festival,’ said BB’s currency management department’s acting executive director Asim Kumer Dasgupta.
‘The BB has taken the move to protect general people from the counterfeit.’
BB people will monitor the market in the areas they have offices. Teams lead by Sonali Bank officers will help cattle businessmen and buyers detect fake notes in the areas where there is no BB office. Taskforces lead by deputy commissioners will work in district town’s markets.
Fake note detection
booths will also be set up in the markets.
The commercial banks had provided this service last year too.
Police, Rapid Action Battalion and intelligence officials will also be posted in the markets for maintaining law and order.
The BB has also plans to run an awareness campaign about how to differentiate between a counterfeit and an original currency by looking at signs printed on the bills.
