After a long dilly-dally the Bangladesh Cricket Board dropped the controversial point system in the Bangladesh Cricket League and reinstated the bylaws that was provided to the franchises initially.
In a comical mistake the BCB provided the franchises and the media two separate bylaws of the tournament, which stoked a major controversy as they had different point counting systems.
In the bylaws provided to the franchises, it was stated that the team that can score over 300 runs in no less than 100 overs in the first innings and the team that bowl out their opponents will get one bonus point respectively.
The BCB realised the mistake only half-way through the second round and amended the bylaws scraping certain bonus points.
It was announced that teams will get only one bonus point either for a win by 10 wickets or by an innings.
However, one of the key franchises, Walton Central Zone, protested the move and threatened to withdraw their team from the tournament, which forced the BCB to give it a rethink.
The issue was kept hanging for a few days which made the tournament itself a joke as the teams were unsure of how many points they have earned despite two of the three rounds have already been completed.
The technical committee of the tournament finally settled the issue on Sunday when it reinstated the bylaws, which saved the tournament from further controversy.
‘We have decided to stick with the bylaws that was provided to the franchises initially,’ said Hafizur Rahman Joarder, tournament committee coordinator, after the meeting of the technical committee at Mirpur.
With the BCB announcement, Walton now lead the table with 10 points ahead of Prime Bank South Zone, who have seven points to their name despite being the only side to win a game in the tournament.
‘We are happy that the BCB acceded to our demands and we are eager to participate in the remaining part of the tournament,’ said Uday Hakim, coordinator of Walton Central.
