The Bangladesh Cricket Board is being kept on their toes as the wait for Shane Jurgensen lingers on after the Australian head coach of the national team, who resigned recently, changed his arrival flight schedule. BCB’s cricket operations chairman Akram Khan said on Tuesday that Jurgensen was expected on Wednesday rescheduling his original arrival date on April 27.
Jurgensen instead sent his resignation letter through e-mail to leave the BCB officials stunned. The BCB was hoping to sort out its differences with Jurgensen once he arrive on Wednesday, but the coach dodged them once again.
Amid frequent changes in his schedule some officials were left in doubt whether the coach at all will be returning to Bangladesh.
The experience of Richard Pybus, who also sent his resignation letter from abroad and never returned, also played in the mind of some officials.
The BCB officials heaved a sigh of relief after the chauffeur of Jurgensen informed that he received a text-message from the coach confirming his arrival time.
In his resignation letter Jurgensen said he would be available for the home series against India, which is expected to begin on June 11, provided the BCB wants him.
The BCB directors left the decision on their president Nazmul Hasan, who is expected to arrive on May 2.
Grounds committee chairman Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan said that unless Nazmul arrives a decision is not possible.
‘Let him [Nazmul] come and observe the situation and take the decision,’ said Lokman.
‘Until he arrives it is not possible for us to comment on his future,’ said Lokman. ‘But in my opinion unless we recruit someone it won’t be wise to release him,’ he added.
The national players and some of the BCB officials are quite convinced that he is the right man to guide the Tigers.
‘I think he is the right man for our team,’ said Khaled Mahmud, chairman of the BCB’s game development committee.
‘What I understand is that we don’t need a high-profile coach, rather someone who has the ability to get close to the players in order to get the best out of them,’ said Mahmud.
‘He looked to possess all those qualities,’ he said.
