Acting mayor of the Barisal City Corporation will announce the 11th budget of the city corporation for the current fiscal today, more than 100 days after the schedule.
The city corporation sources said the size of the budget would be around Tk 380-395 crore without imposing any fresh tax against the revised budget of about Tk 120-125 crore of 2012-13.
Altaf Mahmud, the acting mayor, said the budget prepared by a sub-committee of councillors and would be announced Wednesday noon at Nagar Bhavan in presence of the councillors, officials of BCC and administration and journalists.
He said they also exchanged views with citizen rights activists, cross-section of people to make the budget citizen-friendly, stressing development of city roads, health, sanitation and drainage and water supply facilities.
Meanwhile, rights activists have demanded special allocation for stopping early marriage, developing and empowering women as well as assuring their social and legal safety.
Barisal Municipality was formed in 1869 with two wards of about 10 thousand residents.
It later extended to 10 wards with about 1 lakh residents in pre-liberation period with an area of around 20 square kilometres, which further extended to 25 square kilometres in post-liberation period.
Barisal Municipality was upgraded to Barisal City Corporation with an estimated population of more than four lakh in 30 wards covering an area of 45 square kilometres on July 25, 2002 and now the population stands at about 6 lakh.
