A beggar offered Tk 1,000 in bribe to officials conducting a drive against begging in the capital’s Gulshan yesterday in exchange for his release.
The drive was jointly organized by the Department of Social Services and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
Social Service Officer Chandan Kumar Mitra said they got hold of Tara Mia who was begging in Gulshan-2 area.
“When we tried to take him to a rehabilitation centre, he requested us not to send him there. At one stage, he claimed he was not a beggar and offered Tk 1,000,” said Chandan.
His right hand was amputated and he is from Narsingdi’s Monohardi.
Fifteen other beggars were also taken from Gulshan. They will be sent to a rehabilitation centre in Mirpur-1, Chandan said.
DNCC Executive Magistrate Abdullah Al Baki said they conducted the drive to stop begging in the beggar-free areas of the capital under the Vagrant and Homeless Person (Rehabilitation) Act, 2011.
