Lawyer Bhuban Chandra Shil, 55, who suffered bullet injuries in the head during an attack on a police-listed terrorist in the city street a week ago, died at the intensive care unit of a hospital in Dhaka on Monday morning.
Bhuban, who was a passer-by there, was shot in the head and taken to Popular Hospital in Dhanmondi on the night of September 18.
He was on life support for a week and went under a surgery, but his condition deteriorated.
Doctors declared Bhuban dead at about 11:00am, said the hospital’s assistant manager Rezaul Karim.
Dhanmondi police station’s officer in charge Parvej Islam said the body will be taken to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital before being taken to his hometown Feni.
On the night of 18 September night, a group of miscreants fired indiscriminately at a car of top criminal Tariq Saeed Mamun in Bangladesh Government Press area in the capital’s Tejgaon.
At that time, Bhuban was shot in the head while returning to his home on a motorcycle. Later he was admitted to Dhanmondi Popular in the capital.
Briefing reporters on Tuesday (19 September), Additional Commissioner of Police (DB) Harun Or Rashid said top criminal Mamun – whose car came under attack – is a convict in a case filed over the murder of actor Sohel Chowdhury. He was recently released on bail after serving 20 years in jail.
“While in prison, another top criminal named Sanzidul Islam Emon had a dispute with Mamun. No one was arrested and a case was under process to be filed. They both appeared before the court on 12 September where Emon threatened Mamun. We believe Emon’s men organised the attack,” he added.
Two people were injured during the attack, and have been identified as – Bhuban and Ariful Haque, two “pedestrians”.
