The main opposition BNP on Thursday accused a new political outfit of hatching a conspiracy to split the opposition party ahead of the general election. BNP standing committee member MK Anwar met Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad at his office and asked him to cancel the registration of Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF), accusing it of using BNP’s signs and symbols. Former BNP leader Nazmul Huda had floated BNF after resigning from the opposition party last year. The EC had registered the party recently, allowing it to carryout political activities.
Anwar alleged that BNF was using BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s 19-point political charter for petty political gains.
“A certain outfit is hatching conspiracy to split the nationalist party ahead of the upcoming general election. The EC should cancel registration of the political party on this ground,” he said, adding that the same effort was hatched during the previous one eleven change over.
Following the meeting with the CEC, Anwar told reporters that the new party was using BNP’s symbol and Ziaur Rahman’s portrait on its logo to mislead the people. He added the CEC has endorsed that the use of the same political symbol and charter by different political parties was illegal.
