BNP leaders tasked with coordinating the electioneering of party-backed candidates in four city civic polls on Monday alleged that the local administrations were working in a partisan manner to favour the Awami League-supported contestants. Four BNP teams, each led by a central leader, are now working in the city corporations to mobilise campaigning for the party-backed candidates.
Amir Khasru Mohammad Chowdhury and Shamser Mobin Chowdhury are leading the team in Sylhet, BNP standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy has been sent to Khulna, Nazrul Islam Khan to Rajshahi and Abdullah Al Noman has been looking after the electioneering in Barisal.
Amir Khasru said the BNP-backed mayoral candidate has a fair chance to win if the government did not manipulate the polls. “People from all classes in Sylhet are now fed up with the misdeeds and misrule of the Awami League-led Grand Alliance government. We will win the civic election if the government does not manipulate it intentionally,” he said.
Goyehwar Chandra Roy claimed that there was a tremendous anti-government sentiment in the mind of the voters in Khulna. “Our party-backed mayoral candidate will gain a landslide victory if the election is held in a fair and impartial manner,” he said. “We have no faith in the Awami League-led government as it can do anything to meet its evil political interest,” he added.
Abudllah Al Noman alleged that officials of the local election commission and general administration were working in favour of the ruling party-backed mayoral candidate in Barisal.
Pro-Awami League officials were going to be posted as returning and polling officials and several NGOs were also working in favour of the ruling party-backed candidate following pressure from the government, Noman alleged.
The ruling party candidate and his workers were violating the electoral code but the local administration and EC officials were not taking any measures against them, he said. “The overall position of our candidate is very good. We will win if the government does not engineer the polls,” he added.
