The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday called all concerned to hold rallies and processions across the country today to protest against the attempt, according to the party, to kill its chairperson, Khaleda Zia.
The party called on the interim government to increase security for the party chairperson Khaleda Zia.
The party said in a release, signed by its joint secretary general, Nazrul Islam Khan, that the law enforcing agencies on Tuesday advised Khaleda Zia to go to Comilla directly cancelling rallies and wayside meetings at different places on the Dhaka-Comilla highway.
She refrained from going to the podiums at Chandina, Devidwar and Muradnagar and introduced the party candidates to the voters of respective constituencies standing beside her car.
Soon after she had left the place (Davidwar), the Rapid Action Battalion and the members of the alleged militant outfit JMB exchanged gunfire and RAB detained three persons.
The incident, which took place after the banned outfit distributed leaflets against the BNP across the country, was part of a conspiracy to kill the leader, said the BNP.
