The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Sunday briefed diplomats of European countries about the evolving political situation of the country and the party’s stance.
The briefing, a routine exercise of the main opposition to keep the foreign diplomats posted on political issues, focussed BNP’s position over the current development, particularly the party’s ongoing movement for holding the next general election under a non-party government.
The ambassadors of UK, Germany, France, Denmark, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy, Sweden and Norway attended the meeting held at a Gulshan hotel at 11 am.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir briefed the ambassadors, the meeting sources said.
The ambassadors reportedly said they wanted to see a free, fair and neutral election in Bangladesh with participation of all political parties, the sources said, adding that EU would extend all necessary support for holding fair and credible polls in Bangladesh.
BNP vice-chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury told New Age that it was a regular meeting of BNP with the ambassadors of the European Union.
In reply to a question, he said the overall political situation prevailing in the country came up for discussion.
BNP chairperson’s advisers Reaz Rahman and Sabihuddin Ahmed and senior journalist Shafik Rehman, among others, attended the briefing.
A close aide of BNP chairperson told New Age that BNP is now persuading foreign countries to mount pressure on the government to hold the next general election under a non-party government.
