Opposition BNP on Tuesday demanded immediate cancellation of the amended Information and Communication Technology Ordinance 2013, saying the law has been changed to suppress the opposition and those who hold different opinions and views. “They (govt) with an evil political motive have passed the law hastily through promulgating an ordinance sidetracking parliament. BNP thinks the government will use it as a weapon to suppress its opponents and opposition leaders,” said BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Addressing a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, he also said, “BNP strongly protests the law and demands its immediate annulment.”
The cabinet approved the draft of the ICT (Amendment) Act-2013 on August 19 while made a gazette notification through promulgating the ordinance the following day.
Mentioning that parliament goes into its last session within a few days, Rizvi said passing the law trough the ordinance just ahead of the start of parliament session is against parliamentary norms. “The hurriedly passed law through an ordinance has manifested the government’s ill intention.”
