A BNP delegation, led by party acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, on Monday held a meeting with foreign diplomats and representatives of different embassies and high commissions in Dhaka and put forward the logic of restoration of non-partisan caretaker government (CG) to hold a free and fair election. The meeting held at a local hotel in Gulshan also discussed the ongoing political impasse over the poll-time government and planned anti-government movement of the opposition, according to BNP sources.
When contacted BNP Vice-Chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury confirmed that they had a meeting with ambassadors and representatives of different countries over tea. The other members of the BNP delegation include BNP standing committee member Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar, BNP chairperson’s advisers – Dr Osman Faruk, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Reaz Rahman and Sabih Uddin Ahmed.
Ambassadors and representatives of USA, UK, France, European Union (EU), Pakistan, Sweden, Spain, Australia, South Africa, Germany, Sri Lanka, Vatican City, Canada, the Netherlands, Palestine, Switzerland, Japan, Morocco and Indonesia took part in the meeting.
The BNP delegation made it clear that they won’t take part in the forthcoming elections under the present government as announced by the Prime Minster, a party source said, adding the poll-time government should be formed through dialogue for the sake of holding a fair election. Some diplomats wanted to know whether the BNP had any proposal on poll-time government.
In reply, BNP leaders said they would put forward proposal on election-time government, if the government relaxes its position on the issue.
