Activists of opposition BNP locked in sporadic clashes with the law enforcers at the city’s Kazir Dewri and Nur Ahmed road areas this evening leaving at least 10 injured.
A tense situation was prevailing at Kazir Dewri and Nur Ahmed road areas following the clashes till the time of filing this report at 8:40 pm. According to the eyewitnesses, leaders and activists of Chittagong city BNP started gathering in front of the party office ‘Nasimon Bhaban’ on Nur Ahmed road from this afternoon in a bid to bring out a torch procession in the evening.
Clashes locked in when police obstructed the BNP men from bringing out the torch procession at about 7:30 pm. The BNP activists hurled cocktails towards the law enforcers and swooped on them. Panic gripped Kazir Dewri and Nur Ahmed road areas when chase and counter chase took place between the police and the BNP activists.
Police opened 26 rounds of rubber bullets and three rounds of tear gas canisters to disperse the BNP men. Police also detained two BNP activists from Nur Ahmed road during the clashes.
Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali police station Mohiuddin Selim told The Independent that the BNP men tried to bring out the procession despite restrictions.
