Ruling Awami League leaders on Sunday again called upon the opposition to return to parliament to sit for dialogue shunning the path of confrontation to break the country’s prevailing political impasse. “The opposition should clear its stance first on dialogue, if they want dialogue, they should shun the path of destruction,” said Quamrul Islam, the state minister for law, justice and parliamentary affairs.
He was addressing an anti-hartal rally at the Bangabandhu Avenue in the city on Sunday morning.
The state minister said there is no alternative to talks to resolve the country’s prevailing political stalemate. But certainly BNP will have to go to parliament for this.
Referring to the opposition’s hartal programme, he said, “Creating anarchy by calling hartal is a criminal offence and those involved, will have to face trial, no matter how big a leader he/she is.”
“Wait and see. Legal steps will definitely be taken against those trying to create anarchy in the country in the name of political programmes,” the loquacious AL man said.
He also said the next general election will be held under the supervision of an interim government and the incumbent prime minister Sheikh Hasina will head it.
Meanwhile, in a press conference Awami League presidium member Mohammad Nasim urged the opposition to return to parliament to discuss all issues shunning the path of deadly politics and vandalism.
He also asked the opposition that if they truly want to sit with the government for resolving current political crisis, then why enforce hartal like destructive programme again.
The Awami League leader said no letter will be issued from the government’s side to sit for talks.
Referring to the City Corporation elections, Mohamammad Nasim hoped that the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) should take part in the next general elections as they took part in the different local government elections.
“I hope BNP will participate in the next general election and will accept peoples’ verdict,” Nasim, also the former Home Minister said this while addressing a news conference at the prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office in the city.
He also claimed that over 5600 elections including Jatiya Sangsad by-polls and local government elections were held in the last four and half years under the present government in a free, fair and credible manner.
