The BNP acting secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, on Tuesday said the ruling Awami League would go miles away from power if it budged even an inch from the country’s charter. “Apprehending this, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is telling people that she will not ignore constitutional provisions,” he added. Alamgir was addressing a discussion at the National Press Club.
Referring to the constitutional provision for holding the next general election, Alamgir said Hasina would again be the Prime Minister if the poll was not held in due time. He
rejected the constitutional provision in this regard, saying it does not work for a democratic country.
The country is heading towards a dark tunnel due to the Awami League’s impudence and obstinate attitude, he added.
Alamgir said the ruling party had destroyed the democratic environment. Holding of the next general election has become uncertain due to the fascist and autocratic attitude of the government, he alleged.
There have already been mass protests in every corner of the country and the government’s dream to cling on to power through illegal means would soon become a nightmare, he warned.
Alamgir suggested that the government should take lessons from history that no one can hold on to power forever.
“The Awami League wants to impose the one-party BKSAL rule on the country in a new manner. The 15th amendment to the Constitution has been brought to make that mission a success,” he said.
Alamgir said the Awami League did not try to understand the people’s language, and consequently faced a debacle in the recently held civic body polls. The ruling party will meet the same fate if the next general election is held under a non-partisan CG management, he added.
Taking part in the discussion, MK Anwar, a standing committee member of the party, said people would put up resistance if the government plans to hold the general election under the Hasina administration. “Our party chief Khaleda Zia has urged the government to create a level playing field by restoring the CG system. No election will be allowed if her demand is ignored,” he added.
The Abdus Salam Smrity Sangshad organised the discussion, marking the 14th death anniversary of Abdus Salam Talukdar who was secretary general of the party.
