BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has warned that a grand anti-government movement would be waged from Gazipur if any irregularity took place during the civic body poll scheduled for July 6. “The ruling Awami League has become desperate after its debacle in the recently held four city corporation elections. Now, it’s drawing plans to rig the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election. We’ll wage a movement to oust the government, in case of any untoward incident,” he said.
Alamgir was addressing a programme, demanding immediate whereabouts of BNP leader Chowdhury Alam, at the National Press Club, on Wednesday.
The opposition spokesperson said that the government has been putting pressure on the GCC administration, ahead of the upcoming civic body polls. He also said that the Awami League’s rebel mayoral candidate Jahangir Alam’s name was dropped from the GCC election race, but he could not understand why the Election Commission had to form a team to investigate the matter.
He said the countrymen have sent a message to the ruling party in the four city corporation polls. The AL should give up state power and hold the next general election under the supervision of a non-party caretaker government (CG), he added. He said the government has let loose state terror on opposition party activists.
Criticising the government for indulging in undemocratic acts, he said BNP leaders Chowdhury Alam and M Ilias Ali have been victimised by government vengeance. “We must organise an intensive movement to counter the government’s fascist acts and ensure its immediate removal,” he added.
The Shahbagh Thana unit BNP organised the programme. Party leaders Barkat Ullah Bulu, Mahbub Uddin Khokan, Abdus Salam and Syed Motzzem Hossain Alal spoke at the event.
Earlier, in a separate programme, BNP standing committee member Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain blamed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for instigating unparliamentary language in the House. He said efforts are being hatched to turn Parliament into a dysfunctional body.
Mosharraf was addressing a programme, “Non-party caretaker government (CG) is only a way to resolve the prevailing crisis”, organised by Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad at the National Press Club.
Opposition lawmakers’ presence in Parliament is making the government unhappy, and that is why ruling party lawmakers are using abusive words at opposition leaders, he said.
Mosharraf also said that the ruling Awami League wants to use force to hold the next general election under its own management. No election under a partisan management will be allowed in the country, he added. “We’ll wage a mass upsurge across the country and force the ruling Awami League to hold the next general election under a non-party CG oversight,” he warned.
“People are demanding a level playing field for the next general election. It won’t happen if the non-party CG provision is not restored to the charter,” he added.
