Opposition BNP has decided to provide necessary support to their candidates in all city corporation polls. The decision was taken at the party’s national standing committee meeting, held on Saturday night with BNP Chairperson and the leader of the opposition Khaleda Zia in the chair The meeting held at Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan party office discussed the country’s prevailing political situation and next course of actions to force the government to accept the demand for a non-party caretaker government (CG) to oversee the general election. Senior policymakers of the party also discussed about their activities in the House during the on going budget session.
The committee also discussed the party’s organisational activities and the present political situation in the country, meeting sources said.
After the meeting, BNP standing committee member Lt Genl (retd) Mahbubur Rahman told The Independent that Awami League ministers and members of Parliament are involved in electoral campaign in favour of their candidates in all the city corporations, which is violation of local government body’s election code.
Meeting sources said BNP has welcomed a recent Shiekh Hasina’s comment that her government would dissolve parliament and hold election under an interim administrations, if necessary, to overcome the political standoff.
But, the sources said that the BNP leadership is still sceptical about the intention of PM Hasina, as the AL leaders have been making the misleading statements relating to polls time administration.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina categorically said the ninth parliament would be dissolved on October October 25.
She came up with observation in a meeting of Awami League Parliamentary Party on Thursday night at Jatiya Sangshad Bhavan.
The premier said that no session of the ninth parliament will be held after October 25.
Sheikh Hasina said, “The term of the incumbent government will end on October 25. Then an interim government will be formed. The next general election will be held under the supervision of the government. The polls will be held like as other parliamentary democratic countries of the world.”
As per the constitution, the election process has to begin three months before dissolution of current parliament and the next parliamentary election will be held within 90 days prior to the current parliament`s dissolution.
The ninth parliament began its journey on January 25 in 2009 and the current Jatiya Sangsad will complete its five-year term on January 25.
