Standing committee meeting today
BNP yet to announce convening committees due to internal feud
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is yet to announce 74 district convening committees due to party internal feud though the committees were likely to be announced early in this month. The party will take final decision today (Saturday) at a standing committee meeting, the highest policy making body of the party.
Party sources said there is a conflict between VP Joynal and chairperson’s brother Syed Eskander about who will be the district convenor in Khaleda Zia’s own district Feni. Same is the situation in Manikgong, own district of BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain. In Manikgong, there is a conflict between secretary general and BNP leader Harun-ur-Rashid Khan Munno. There are some problems in Comilla, own district of standing committee member Khandaker Mosharref Hossain. Another standing committee member M Samsul Islam wants to make his son, Saiful Islam the convenor while BNP leader Mizanur Rahman Sinha wants the post of district convenor.
When asked about internal conflict, Khandaker Mosharref Hossain said, “BNP is one of the largest popular political parties and there are many competitors in the party but no conflict. Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is trying to resolve the problems where there are many competitors.”
Another BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed MP said, “Everything is final and Chairperson will take final decision regarding formation of district convening committee tomorrow at standing committee meeting.”
Replying to a query about three BNP leaders including former speaker Jamiruddin Sirkar to appear before the parliamentary probe committee, Maudud said, “The parliamentary probe committee took wrong decision not publishing the allegations against them and not informing those through letter. As a result, people think that the investigation is not about corruption but for tarnishing their image.”
