The BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance will stage agitation rallies and bring out processions at district level headquarters across the country on Sunday protesting the embargo on political gatherings in the capital imposed by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Saturday. “We along with our alliance partners will stage rallies at district level headquarters on Sunday as DMP has imposed ban on political gatherings in the capital so that the opposition cannot wage anti-government movement on non-party caretaker government (CG) issue,” BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Saturday.
Another meeting with the party’s alliance partners is scheduled for Sunday. After the meeting, the party will unveil its next course of action programme, the opposition spokesperson said.
Alamgir made the announcement before media after the BNP’s National Standing Committee meeting held at the party chief Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office in the capital last night. BNP standing committee members RA Ghani, Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, MK Anwar, Mirza Abbas, ASM Hannan Shah, Rafiqul Islam Mia, Nazrul Islmal Khan, Sarwari Rahman and Goyeshwar Chandra Roy were present at the meeting.
Earlier, Alamgir termed the DMP imposed indefinite ban on political gathering in the capital unconstitutional and demanded its immediate withdrawal for the sake of continuation of democracy in the country.
“Such an extreme undemocratic decision of the government is blatantly a conspiracy to kill the country’s democracy in a planned way. The ban has to be withdrawn immediately,” Alamgir said. The national standing committee meeting of BNP started at about 8 pm with Khaleda Zia, chairperson of the party, in the chair.
Earlier, BNP chairperson said that her party’s stance over the country’s latest political situation may be unveiled on Monday after meetings with the party’s national standing committee and its alliance partners.
“The national standing committee of the party is going to sit for a discussion meeting over the country’s latest political situation at my Gulshan office tonight (Saturday),” she said adding we will also sit with our party’s alliance partner over the same issue on Sunday night.
“And then, we will unveil our party stance before the nation,” Khaleda said when newsmen sought her reaction over the country’s prevailing political situation.
Khaleda was addressing a meeting with the Hindu community leaders on the occasion of their Shuva Bijoya at the Ladies Club in the capital Saturday afternoon.
