Unidentified miscreants hurled crude bombs at the house of information minister Hasanul Haque Inu in Darus Salam area of Mirpur in the city on Sunday afternoon. A media statement said Inu’s residence suffered “heavy damage” in the explosion, but no one was injured. It also said that family members of the minister were inside the house during the blast.Inu’s wife said there had been at least “four powerful” explosions, according to the statement. “We’re not hurt, but the bombs, which were very powerful, caused a lot of damage here at our house,” said an official of the information ministry, quoting Afroza Haq Rina, the minister’s wife, as saying.
Mir Akram U Ahmed, public relations officer of the information ministry, told reporters that the minister was not at home when the incident occurred.
Quoting the minister’s wife, Ahmed said the bombs were thrown at the house, located at 137, Darus Salam Road, at around 1:15 pm. “It is a joint family. The minister lives there with his family members, including his father, siblings, son and daughter-in-law,” he added.
After the attack, the minister himself had called Hasan Mahmud Khandaker, inspector general of police, Ahmed said. The information minister, while speaking on different private television channels, blamed Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, for the attack.
The officer-in-charge of Darus Salam police station, Khalilur Rahman, told The Independent, “Senior officials of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Detective Branch, Criminal Investigation Department and Special Branch visited the scene. An investigation is being conducted to find the culprits.”
Earlier, on Tuesday morning, unidentified miscreants had hurled three crude bombs at the official residence of foreign minister Dipu Moni in Eskaton Garden area of the city.
Family members of the foreign minister, including her husband Dr Tawfique Newaz, son and daughter, were in the house during the explosions, but no one was hurt in the incident.
Maruf Hasan Sarder, deputy commissioner of Ramna Division, had told The Independent, “According to witnesses, two youths on a black motorbike carried out the bomb attack. They immediately fled the scene.”
The minister, who was on her way to Brussels, made a stopover in London when the news of the explosions reached her.
